Default A little motor at my work goes BOOM!

This happened to a 12" Vermeer Chipper the other day. It's a 2005 Cummins 3.3 4cyl Diesel Turbo. Looks like a piston failure is the culprit. At first I thought it was a dropped valve and then rattled around in the chamber for a while then the piston gave way, but both valves still in the head of that cylinder. Don't know what the hell happened. No pieces of piston are left in the cylinder and with the rod slinging around in the hole it beat about half of the cylinder wall out. Hell, it even busted two holes in one side of the block and a big ass chunk on the other side.

Haven't taken it apart and prolly won't. All I know is you can't buy a shortblock OR longblock......you can only get a complete engine with all attaching pieces like the turbo, water pump, fuel filter block, fuel injection pump, etc.....and it cost $5425 to my front door of the shop.

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.........
