Default how to repack a can

Assuming you have taken off your exhaust.
take a drill and drill out the rivets
"for a welded muffler, you can take it apart and repack it, but you have to be a very skilled welder (if you want it to look good), and you have to have a good cutting tool,"

Punch out the rest of the rivet bodies
Once the rivets are punched out you can take off the end caps. The D&D is one solid unit with both end caps welded on, some other units have sews and are easy to get apart. I had to use a rubber mallet and a soft piece of pine to push the end caps out of the tube.

Use a wire brush to clean the core
wrapped the core with steel wool to prevent blowouts
I read that wrapping steel wool around the core first prevents the new packing from getting blown out.

line up the holes and tap the core back into the tube, you have to pop rivet them on from below cause the pins will fall into the can if you do them from above.

hammered the rivet caps flat and then clean the pipe and polished the whole thing with polish until it shines!

thats about it. you can usually buy repack kits from must of the exuast companys for around 30-50 dollars or so.

Default re-pack can

Some folks are wondering how and why this is done. I did mine not to long ago and used this article to do mine:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/howto/122_0309_howto/

This explains how and why you should repack you motorcycle muffler.

A few side notes:

The old stuffing/packing will:

1-stink, and there will be LOTS of little fibers, and old black carbon floating around everywhere. SO wear a dust mask!!!

2-itch!!!! Please wear long sleeves and gloves cause this stuff ITCHES. I was itching a couple days later cause I didnt wear a long sleeve shirt. You wear one.

Getting the end backon my can after repacking was, for some reason, difficult. It wouldnt start square if you know what I mean. Take your time and dont get frustrated. It will go back together just takes holding your mouth right.

Dont use to big a drillbit or the new rivet will never tighten right.

Thats about it. The link explains everything really well!!!

Damn that's cool!!! Thanks man. Now if I can just get a new end cap for my Jardine twin outlet I'll be all set.
