Default stripping/polishing wheel lips

First off I did not take picture while I did this, sorry, shouldve.

List of supplies:

1-Gloves, a good pair cause the stripper BURNS on your skin.
2-small paint brush or some way to apply the stripper.
3-Good masking tape, atleast 1 inch wide. One roll will be plenty.
4-Aircraft paint stripper, you can get this at autozone or advanced auto
5-steel wool, one medium and one fine for polishing later.
6-a good aluminum polish, I used eagle1 from advanced
7-paint thinner
8-a bunch of old rags/towels

OK first you have to get the bike up off the ground. I used my rear stand and used a floor jack for the front, work fine.

Once you get the bike up, you can start masking. I seen no reason to clean the wheels before hand. If you want you can. Rip the tape in about 6 inch sections and its easier to get on and isnt sticking to everything around it. take your time and mask off the center line on each side of the wheels.

- Now you can mask off the rear and do it from beginning to end or like I did I masked off both and stripped the rear, got it clean, then did the front. then went on to polishing. Its up to you.
- Also some folks like to mask the tire edge to, I didnt and see no need if you dont slop it all over it. But what I did get on the tire didnt hurt it at all.

Now that you have the wheels masked off, get you gloves on (trust me) and apply the stripper in a painting fashion wiping it from center to outside edge, so that you lessen the chance of getting it under the tape. ** IMPORTANT- do not apply to much stripper as it will run down the spokes once you roll the wheel around** Get the edges good and the little gap around the edge of the tire (not alot here). I did the rear and let it sit for about 15 minutes and took a old towel and wiped away all the old paint that was loose. **IMPORTANT- do not rub the towel towards the the center from the outside. This will push stripper under the tape!!!!**

There was still a few small areas that didnt let go. So I took a little paint brush and added some stripper to those spots. Couple minutes and wiped it all down.

Now remove the tape carefully because there will be stripper on it. I then took a little paint thinner and rubbed all around the wheel, Just to clean off any excess.

Now, take the medium steel wool and rub all around the polished area. Rub it really good like you were scuffing paint. Get the edges good also. Now do the same with the fine wool.

Now just polish it out. Should be self explanatory. Just keep polishing till you get the shine you want.

Now I took some touch up paint ( in black of course) and touched up the spots where the stripper got under the tape, (cause it will).

Thats about it, got anymore questions post em here!!!!!!

EDIT. You can spray some clear coat on the aluminum once you get the shine you want, and supposedly you dont have to polish it anymore. I didnt do this and probably wont, cause its really easy and quick to polish back out to a shine once they dull alittle!!!!!! But I know some who have cleared theirs and like it!!!

You've got a great start, but To really make them shine like chrome get some dico polishing wheels and polish with the following

1.Pink polishing compound
2.White polishing compound
3. Jewlers polishing compound
Finally. Mothers metal polish

I think your bike would look awesome with the entire wheels polished rather than just the lips. my neighbor has an 05 gsxr1000 blk/slvr and he polished his wheels and it looks baller. quick wipe after every ride and a good rubbing everyonce in a while while the wheels are on the bike, i'd take the wheels and rotor off before putting it up for the winter and power polish them really good, then usually another good power polishing midway through rideing season will keep polished wheels looking good.

powdercoat your swingarm black, polish the entire wheels, polish up your rearsets and riders pegs and that bike would be off the chain hot! rearsets and passenger pegs would be pretty inexpensive through a chrome exchange company and would probably look better then polished. just my 2cents, cant wait to see some new pictures no matter what all you end up doing.

Great tips, thanks! I'm a little confused about exactly which part of the wheel you're polishing. Can you post a picture of the finished product so I can see? Thanks!
