Default 96 F3 chain replacement

I am back working on an F3 trying to get it road worthy. Right now, the chain is so rusted that it would probably fall off if slightly provoked.

I would like to replace the chain myself. Reading the service manual, I can ONLY use a chain where the master link needs to be crimped rather than a master link with a clip that you can just slide on.

So instead of paying $100 shop time for something stupidly easy, anyone ever try to use a clipped master link chain? Or is there a way that if I were Macgyver, would I be able to use a common tool to crimp the master link?

Thanks in advance.

YES I have a clip type link on my chain ! AND had one on tha last chain I had.....
two things:

1. make sure the closed end of the clip is pointed in the direction of the chains travel!!!!
2. dab alittle black rvt silicone on the backside of it when you slide it on!!

Ive NEVER had a problem with a clip style master link....I have slung a clip off, but it was because I had no clue and put it on backwards and the chain slung it off!!! besides that nothing, nada!

So I went ahead and got a crimping tool and chain and all. Turns out the dealer gave me the wrong size master link. Luckily the chain came with a clip on one. We will see how it goes... hope I live...

the bad thing about the clip on chains, is that if, for some reason, they do come loose, that chain thats now whipping free, can either mess up your bike, or worse, mess up you. But like Pit says, if you take the time to make sure you put the clip on in the proper direction, you should be reasonably safe.
