Unhappy 4th time riding my F2, now it is dead...sort of

I bought a F2 from a guy about 2 weeks ago. It rode fine with the exception of a minor hesitation in the low RPM's. Yesterday I rode to work without issue. However, when I went to go home, the bike would not start. I push started it and made it home. I went to go out again and the bike just shut off. I checked my gas tank and there was a little fuel in. I tried switching to reserve with no luck. I went home, got a gas can and put some more gas in the bike. It started with a jump, ran about 4 miles and died again. Jumped it again and it was running rough as hell. It did this 3 or 4 times until I could get it home again.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? My first thought is junk in the fuel line somewhere and a problem with the electrical or alternator.

Thanks for any and all input.

Tripp

I would charge the battery, get it started, and check charging system voltage both at idle and at 3000~3500 rpms, if you're not significantly above battery voltage at 3500 rpms, you probably have a bad regulator/rectifier. Common problem on CBRs from what I've seen and/or read.

I hate to sound stupid, but how do I test the charging system voltage?

Thanks!

You will need a voltmeter, preferably a digital multimeter.

take a volt meter and put the positive lead on the positive terminal of battery, same for negative lead. easy test. your voltage at 3500 should be close to 14 volts I think.

Right on. Thanks for the info. I will give that a try.

If it is reading less that 14V, does that mean there is a problem with my Stator?

Most likely it will be a bad rectifier/regulator, as is the case with most charging systems of this type, even outboard motors. Some outboards have water cooled regulators that last a lot better. If yours is bad, you may want to look into an upgraded one, I hear the GSXR ones work and last better, also there are some better ones on Ebay.
