Adjusting Chain on CBR929RR
Recently bought a 2000 model 929rr. I have ordered a new chain and sprockets for it, as the ones on it are slightly worn. However, the chain needed adjusting, the manual calls for 1 and 3/4" of play, this seems loose, I understand that suspension travel will obviously effect the slack in the chain. I"ve adjusted the chain a couple of times, one time using roughly an inch of slack with the bike on its kick stand (don't have a spool stand atm, tho that will change shortly.)
My question is this, after adjusting the chain, it became far to tight, so I loosened it, back to the orginal 1" of play, then the chain became far too loose, with roughly the original 1 and 3/4's of play. What is, in anyone's opinion, a good slack adjustment for this chain. The current 1 and 3/4's is VERY NOISY. not just chain slap, it sounds as if the transmission is falling apart..however, after extensive checking, it is just the chain making noise. With the chain tightened up to 1" the noise goes away, and the bike performs fine, but it seems hard to figure out why the slack comes and goes like it does. I'm assuming its because of suspension travel in part, but, in the end, if I tightened the chain on the bike while its cold and at rest, theoretically, it should return to the same slack position, say, the following morning after riding it the previous day. My chain doesn't seem to be doing that...any advice would be most apreciated..Thanks in advance.
